GIVING BACK
NYAGA PAUL MAWALLA

VISIONARY, ADVOCATE, BUSINESS MAN, HUMANITARIAN AND PHILANTHROPIST

ADVOCATE NYAGA MAWALLA (1973– 2013)

A VISIONARY, BUSINESSMAN AND PHILANTHROPIST WHO PAVED THE WAY FOR YOUNG TANZANIANS

Nyaga Paul Mawalla left a legacy that established him as one of Tanzania’s great leaders.

Nyaga Mawalla was a brilliant scholar. Although he planned to become an engineer, his father, Advocate Juma Sawaya Mawalla, a renowned Tanzanian jurist, persuaded him to follow in his footsteps to practice law. The young Advocate swiftly grew his father’s law firm from a small general firm into a major practice specialising in corporate, property and commercial law.

He was a visionary in business – he introduced a new of way thinking into the traditional practice of law, bringing together innovative legal and commercial solutions.

And he was a humanitarian – establishing an education trust fund for bright young potential leaders in law and business. Nyaga Mawalla’s estate is held in trust to support and finance successful young applicants with their education, underpinned and guided by “the Mawalla Way”.

In his lifetime, Nyaga Mawalla saw a generation of young people accepting their responsibility, like he did, to absorb themselves in their studies and work tirelessly to gain a deep and authentic understanding of the disciplines that drive the world.

This vision, this fund, and the legacy he left through his pioneering work in property law, wildlife law and business, among others, will inform the unfolding development of Tanzanian society for years to come.

GIVING BACK
THE MAWALLA FOUNDATION

A FOUNDATION FOR SHAPING THE FUTURE

THE NYAGA MAWALLA FOUNDATION

THE FUTURE WILL BE SHAPED BY TODAY’S YOUNG MINDS. LET US GUIDE THEM

“To build the world we want; our young scholars must comprehend what makes the world work. I say that the road to our future will be determined by those steeped in law and business. These learnings, seeded from a shared heritage, will shape our heroes of the next generation”. Nyaga Mawalla

In his will, Nyaga Mawalla stipulated that the Mawalla Education Trust Fund must be established to manage the assets that he had set aside for the purpose of educating young Tanzanians in their pursuit of studying law and business. This trust fund operates as the Nyaga Mawalla Foundation which invests, oversees and manages his estate to educate the Mawalla family children as well as other young, talented Tanzanians who apply for funding and support.

The first group of intakes to have benefited from the Nyaga Mawalla Foundation is currently enjoying support. Once they have graduated, the next group of students will be chosen to pursue their studies and receive mentoring support. While studying, these students are also taught the philosophy and values of “the Mawalla Way” – guiding them into becoming trusted business people, responsible citizens and respected pillars of society.

After graduation, these young leaders are offered career paths at Mawalla or are encouraged to enter key positions within the industry that will advance Tanzania’s society.

During his lifetime, Nyaga Mawalla heard and acknowledged our nation’s voice when Mwalimu JK Nyerere said: “...intellectuals have a special contribution to make to the development of our nation, and to Africa. And I am asking that their knowledge, and the greater understanding that they should possess, should be used for the benefit of the society of which we are all members.” - Julius Kambarage Nyerere
